Guy Martin's Great British Power Trip

Channel 4

Channel 4 is one of the UK's top 3 Broadcast Channels, they commission independent production companies to create programmes and documentaries for UK audiences. For this project they teamed up with Drax Group, one of the largest generators of electicity in the UK & Worldwide.

In this 3-part documentary commissioned by Channel 4, Guy Martin investigates how Britain makes its power and why it costs so much…

We followed Guy Martin - Former British motorcycle racer, turned heavy vehicle mechanic, come presenter - as he delved behind the scenes of the inner workings of Britain’s busiest power station.

When Drax Group reached out to us to discuss a very rare occasion that they would be pausing the operation of some pretty heft machinery, to allow the filming of TV content, our brief was was to film as much as we possibly could over the course of two shoot days - and if there is something we are well-versed with, it’s running and gunning!

We captured all the major parts of the UK’s energy generation process, from the creation of sustainable biomass, to the inner workings of industrial boilers, to the control room and the team keeping a safe eye on the plant, to the inside of the cooling towers that use the natural cycle of convection, air circulation and recycled water to keep the whole system cool.

There were a few challenges along the way, filming in places where people never usually venture inside, shimmying up ladders and easing camera equipment through small hatches. When filming in the inside of one of the UK's biggest industrial boilers, our crew even had to suit up in special air fed masks and safety suits - if you're imagining a crew of astronauts holding cameras you're on the right track!

Whilst capturing the series in action, one of our other priorities was to shoot an abundance of content to populate an essential ‘video library’, bank of b-roll footage, for the organisation to be able to utilise for all upcoming and essential communications.

Behind The Scenes Video

We felt very privileged to get to see and experience the inner workings of this site. It was a very successful two days of filming, we captured an abundance of footage, which continues to be heavily used for a range of internal and external marketing communications.
